Taize Prayer Services
Taizé Prayer Services at University Presbyterian Church
A Time for Reflection and Peace
At University Presbyterian Church (UPC), we are committed to creating meaningful opportunities for spiritual growth and connection. During the sacred seasons of Lent and Advent, we offer Taizé Prayer Services every Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. These services provide a serene and contemplative space for worship, inviting participants to pause, reflect, and draw closer to God through music, prayer, and silence. Open to all—UPC members, LSU students, and the broader Baton Rouge community—these services offer a unique way to experience God’s presence in a tranquil, meditative setting.
What is Taizé Prayer?
Taizé prayer is a meditative worship style inspired by the Taizé Community, an ecumenical monastic community founded in 1940 in Taizé, France. Known for its simplicity and beauty, Taizé prayer combines:
-
Chanted Music: Short, repetitive songs with simple melodies and rich harmonies, often sung in multiple languages, creating a meditative atmosphere.
-
Scripture and Prayer: Brief readings from scripture, intercessory prayers, and communal responses that invite reflection and connection.
-
Silence: Extended periods of silence to center the heart and mind, allowing space for personal prayer and contemplation.
-
Candlelit Ambiance: Soft lighting and candles enhance the peaceful, sacred environment, fostering a sense of calm and reverence.
These elements create a worship experience that is both deeply personal and communal, welcoming people of all faith backgrounds to join in prayer and reflection. At UPC, our Taizé services are designed to offer spiritual renewal during the reflective seasons of Lent (leading to Easter) and Advent (preparing for Christmas).
