Nurture
Nurture Ministry at University Presbyterian Church
Caring for Our Community with Compassion
At University Presbyterian Church (UPC), our Nurture Ministry embodies our commitment to caring for our congregation, the Louisiana State University (LSU) community, and the broader Baton Rouge area. Rooted in love and service, this vital ministry provides support, encouragement, and practical assistance to those in need, fostering a sense of belonging and care. Much of this work is carried out by our dedicated church volunteers—members who generously offer their time and talents to make a difference. Whether you’re seeking support or feel called to volunteer, we invite you to join us in this meaningful ministry. Contact our church office at [insert contact info] to learn more about accessing these programs or contributing to our efforts.
Below, explore the diverse programs within our Nurture Ministry, designed to meet a variety of needs with compassion and community.
Nurture Ministry Programs
Caregivers Support Group
This group provides a safe and supportive space for those caring for disabled, ill, or aging loved ones. Monthly meetings offer encouragement, resources, and shared experiences to help caregivers navigate their challenges with strength and hope. Open to all, this group fosters connection and understanding for those in caregiving roles.
Church Friends
The Church Friends program builds one-on-one relationships within our church family, pairing members for companionship and support. Whether it’s sharing coffee, attending church events together, or simply checking in, this initiative helps strengthen bonds and ensures everyone feels connected and valued.
Grief Support
Our Grief Support program offers compassionate care to members who have lost a loved one. We provide booklets on grief, access to counseling resources, and opportunities to join support groups where participants can share their experiences and find comfort in community.
Food Ministry
The Food Ministry coordinates volunteers to provide meals—typically dinners—for families facing challenging circumstances, such as the birth of a child, illness, or the loss of a loved one. Additionally, we host an annual Cook Day, where volunteers prepare and freeze meals for distribution throughout the year, ensuring timely support for those in need.
Funeral Support
When a church member passes away, our Funeral Support team organizes a caring and meaningful reception following the funeral or memorial service. Volunteers assist with preparing food, setting up, serving, or cleaning up, offering comfort and hospitality to grieving families and friends.
Equipment Closet
Our Equipment Closet provides essential medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches, for members to borrow at no cost. These donated items help individuals maintain mobility and independence during recovery or long-term needs.
Hospital Visitation
Through our Hospital Visitation program, church officers and volunteers maintain a schedule of daily visits to members who are hospitalized. These visits offer prayer, encouragement, and a reminder of the church’s love and support during difficult times.
Sunday Rides
The Sunday Rides program coordinates transportation for members who need assistance getting to Sunday worship services (11:00 a.m. fall/spring, 10:00 a.m. summer) or other church events. Volunteers provide reliable and friendly rides, ensuring everyone can participate in our community.
Outreach to Community
UPC serves as a host site for community organizations and support groups, fostering education and healing in Baton Rouge. We partner with groups like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Huntington’s Disease Support, and Overeaters Anonymous, providing space for their meetings and programs. Learn more about hosting opportunities on our Community Partnerships page.
Home Communion
In collaboration with the Worship Committee, our Home Communion program brings the sacrament of communion to homebound members. This meaningful ministry ensures that those unable to attend worship can still participate in this sacred act of faith.
CD of “Old-Time Hymns”
We offer CDs featuring beloved hymns performed by the UPC Adult Choir, available for members to enjoy at home. These recordings bring comfort and inspiration, connecting listeners to the rich musical tradition of our church.
